Description . Red Oxide Primer is specially designed for interior and exterior use on iron and steel. The ferrous pigments used are ideally suited for protection of structural steelwork and other metalwork where an economical finish with good obliteration is required. It is easy to apply and quick drying so large areas may be covered rapidly.
Properties . Red Oxide Primer is based on a urethane alkyd resin system with a flash point above 35 ° c.
Preparation . Great attention should be paid to correct surface preparation, as this is the single most important step in the painting sequence. Prior to painting, ensure that all traces of grease, dust, oils and grit etc are completely removed. All loose and flaking material should be removed by scraping and wire brushing. Avoid inhalation of dust, wear a suitable dust mask if dry sanding. Special precautions should be taken with preparation of pre 1960`s paint surfaces as they may contain harmful lead. Application in damp or very cold conditions should be avoided.
Coverage . Coverage rates will depend upon the surface to be painted but 12-15 sq. metres per litre would be expected.
Application . Red Oxide Primer can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. For brush application, use a good quality brush to achieve best results. For roller application, a short pile sheepskin roller is recommended. For airless spraying, thinning should be avoided if possible (although this will always be dependent upon the equipment and application conditions).
Spray tip aperture 13-17 thou (0.33mm – 0.43mm ) Spray tip angle 50 ° - 70 ° Minimum working pressure 2000 psi .
Once fully dry, final finishes can then be applied over re d oxide primed surfaces if required .
Do not apply in very cold or damp conditions .
Drying Time . Touch dry in 4 – 6 hours depending upon conditions. Low temperatures will extend drying times. Normally recoatable after 16 - 24 hours.
Colour Availability. Red
Clean Up . Remove as much paint as possible from equipment before washing. Brushes, rollers and spray equipment should be cleaned immediately after use with white spirits or a proprietary brush cleaner.
Safety Precautions . Ensure good ventilation of the area to be painted. Whilst this product is not considered to be highly flammable, sensible precautions should be taken to avoid sources of ignition. No smoking. When spraying or applying in enclosed areas on a large scale, suitable breathing apparatus must be worn. Observe good hygiene and avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of accidental contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water and seek medical advice. In common with most oil based paints, this product contains Cobalt Carboxylate and Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime. These materials may produce an allergic reaction. For further information, see Health and Safety Data sheet.
Storage . Protect from frost. Store upright in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Replace lid firmly after use.
Disposal . Do not empty paint in to drains and watercourses. Some Local Authorities have special facilities for disposal of waste paint.
VOC Leve l High VOC (25 to 50 % ) VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) contribute to atmospheric pollution.
Special instructions. Stir before use. If thinning is required, use White spirit. Where more than 1 can of a colour is to be used in the same area, intermix before use.
